Furthermore, the Dubai International Airport is home to the Emirates and Emirates SkyCargo which is the international airline service in Dubai.

This immensely important and super busy airport is situated in the Al Garhoud district in the south east of Dubai. It lies at a distance of 4 km (2.5 miles) from the heart of the city and is operated and maintained by the Department of Civil Aviation, Dubai. It’s well connected by the D 89 road which is one of the longest intra-city roads. Starting at Deira Corniche it runs vertical to D 85 and goes south-east towards the Dubai International Airport. Following this way you can take a car hire in Dubai to reach the airport without much traffic.

Dubai International Airport

Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai ordered the construction of this airport with the efforts of Costain way back in 1959. There on the Dubai International Airport formally opened with its first ever airfield in the year 1960. At this time the airport just had a runway made of compacted sand with a length of 1,800 m (5,906 ft) and was able to handle aircrafts that were the size of Douglas DC-3. Other than the runway the airport also had an apron, three turning areas and a little terminal.

In the later stage as the airport started expanding and the Airport Fire Services area was introduced, the need for more suitable space and a hangar style building became indispensable. These necessary constructions were made available to the airport by the year 1976. The new buildings and constructions were strategically erected in between the runway ends to ensure well organized flying operations.

Moreover, a new building was added for accommodating the Electronics Engineering Section, the Airport Maintenance Engineer, and the Stores unit. By the end of 1978 the expansion work of the Restaurant area, the transit lounge along with the renovation of the upper level and rudiments of a new kitchen were completed. Following a new asphalt runaway was added in May 1963. Finally after a new taxiway was introduced along with extensions of the Terminal Building, newly constructed hangars and latest Airport and Navigational aids installation, the airport was formally opened in 1965.

15 May 1965 was the Inauguration Day characterized by the landing of the first jumbo jets of Kuwait Airways Comets and Middle East Airlines. The Dubai International Airport was termed as the 17th busiest airport in passenger traffic and 11th busiest by cargo traffic in 2009. As on June 2009, the Dubai International Airport was reported to have a record 5,600 weekly flights; managed by more than 100 airlines leading to more than 200 destinations around the globe.
