Kanyakumari in Kerala

Kanyakumari the southern most land tip of India is one of the famous tourist destinations in kerala. It is also spelt as Kanniyakumari.  Kanyakumari district is bounded by Tirunelveli district In the North and North east and by Kerala  in the North west.  Kanykumari got this name after the goddess Kanyakumari Amman who is the famous deity of this area.

History of Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari was once known as “The Granary of Travancore” which lies at the Southwestern part of Indian Peninsula.  It was under Travancore for a long period and later merged with Tamilnadu in the year 1956 under the State Linguistic Re-organization Act. 

According to the Hindu story, Kanya Devi (avatar of goddess Parvati) was fixed to marry Lord Shiva, but as it failed.  The rice and other grains which was meant for the wedding feast remained in the same position(never cooked, nor used).  As days passed, the uncooked grains turned into stones.  Many believes that the small stones which looks like rice on the shore are the grains of the wedding that was never used. 

Kanyakumari (Kanya Devi) is virgin goddess who blesses pilgrims and tourist who reaches here.  Another Hindu legend, Lord Hanuman while carrying a mountain with his life saving herb dropped a piece of earth .  The herb Mrita Sanjivani from the Himalayas to Sri Lanka during the war between  Lord Rama and Ravana.  This piece of earth is called Medicine Hill.  The meaning is: Hills for medicines.  This is said to be the reason for the unlimited of  various  medicinal plants in the area.  The hills is located near Kottaram about 7kms away from Kanyakumari town on the Kanyakumari Nagercoil highway.
