The Kumari Amman is located at the end of Beach road right on the ocean front.  The entrance to the temple is through the Northern gate.  The deity is faced to East.  The Eastern gates is closed everyday except on some festival days. The place Kanyakumari got its name from the Goddess Kanyakumari Amman who is the popular deity of this place.  The Kumari Amman temple overlooks the shores from Kanyakumari.

Kumari Ammam Temple History

According to hindu legends, Goddess Parvati did penance in this place to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband. She decided to remain virgin when she was not successful in her penance. Thus the temple is dedicated to Parvati in the form of the virgin goddess Devi Kanya.  The ideal of the goddess has a sparkling diamond on her nose, which is supposed to outshine the sea.

The temple opens from 4.30 to 11.30 in the morning and from 5.30 to 8.30 in the evening.  Entry of non Hindus are strictly prohibited.

Goddess Kumari Amman’s deity is made out of blue stone and stands above a pedestal.  The crown on her head has valuable diamond and gems embedded.  Devi is fully covered with precious gold ornaments.  The goddess is seen holding a rosary with her right hand and touching a garland with her left hand and she has brilliant earrings on her ears.   However the most attraction is the diamond nose ring.  Such was the brightness of the nose ring that in the days before light houses many ships drifted its course thinking the light reflected from the nose ring as that from a lighthouse.  To avoid such mishaps the Eastern gate of the temple facing Bay of Bengal is shut permanently.  Except for five times in the year when the Devi is taken out for ceremonial bath.

Festivals and special time to visit Kumari Ammam Temple

If you are not particular about visiting the temple it is better to avoid the visit as the festivals are also the time when the Goddess is taken out in a procession which is a treat to watch.  Two yearly festivals see huge rush in the temple.  In the month of October, ten day Navaratri festival is celebrated.  The goddess is taken out in a Horse driven carriage way to Mahadanapuram a nearby town that is on the last day of Navaratri.
The other major festivals falls on May and June.  This festival is called Vaikasi Visakam that is celebrated for ten days.  During this festival the Devi is taken out in procession around the streets morning and evening.
