Periyar wild life sanctuary located in Kumily Kerala is one of the top Tourist destinations in kerala. Coverage area is 777 sq kms. Formed in 1895, this reservoir is around the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife. About four kms from Periyar, Kumily is a fast developing town where Tourism is catching up just like the spice trade and the major occupation of this small town. The town is also well occupied with good hotels and resorts for Accommodations.
Periyar and Kumily are the most possible points from which visitors can easily diagnose Kerala’s beautiful Cardamom hills.
By going on boat cruises you can check out the wilds of Periyar Sanctuary. Periyar lake offers and excellent boating spot for tourists. Although It is strangely to see many animals from the boats, still you see a family of Elephants, Sambar Deer and Wild Boar by the edge of lake. You can also use boat of your own for some hours by renting. To increase your chances, it is better to catch the 7.00 am boat. The best time to visit here is from the months of October and June.
