Thotlakonda Buddhist site:

An ancient place known for it Buddhist Viharas. It is located in Visakhapatnam which is in the State of Andhra Pradesh in country of India. This place is almost 16kms away from Visakhapatnam on the way to Bhemmunipatnam.

Story  behind the name “Thotlakonda”: This place has been named Thotlakonda because of the Rock of Troughs used to store water. The findings of Structural remains throw light on the way of life which existed in these Viharas centuries ago. These places enjoyed days of Glory till 3rd Century AD. The decline started with the advent of other isms, lack of patronage and foreign invasions.

Baavikonda Buddhist site:

Baavikonda was a sister monastery of the site found at Thotlakonda. The structures found here are very similar to those at Thotlakonda. Curiously, it houses a number of water reservoirs and wells from which it derived its name Hill of Wells. Among other findings, archaeologists found some quantity of ash and bone in earthenware that were probably the remains of Gautama Buddha III. The Roman and Satavahana Coins found here confirm the existence of maritime trade with Rome.

Sankaram 2000 year old Buddhist site:

Sankaram is a 2000 year old Buddhist site , 41kms away from Vishakhapatnam. Unearthed by a Briton, Alexander Rea in 1907, these monastic ruins tell the tale of three phases of Buddhism, Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana that flourished there. This is the must visit tourist destination for all the architecture lovers as it is filled with Wonderful structures that have survived the sands of time and are still standing in defiance to the winds of change. This Vihara excavation , that was alive for 1000 years, offers a glimpse into the rich culture and heritage of Buddhism.
